The Kind Foundation

Mō tātou katoa. For all of us.

The Kind Foundation’s purpose is to meet and relate to the needs of people in their communities, and where they work, in a way that will encourage them to develop as individuals, express their own needs and reach their full potential.  The Kind Foundation does this through programmes and relationships, involving The Kind Foundation workers with special youth, community, recreational and motivational skills, guided by the four core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.

Our core purpose is to Invest in the Next Generation.  By this we mean that we are always thinking of how we can develop young people today, so that they will be great members of society tomorrow.

We do this through a range of programmes, but also by empowering others in our community to be involved with our cause – because ultimately the future is all about making sure we raise our children and young people in the best way we can.

We do this by providing services which create a financial return, and by investing our money in programmes and assets which will make a difference to people over the long term. Not just for our participants today, but also their children, and their grandchildren.

We do this by offering opportunities to other community groups to leverage off our asset base, for them to do more good work.

We do this by providing pathways for businesses and philanthropic organisations to be involved in our cause, through supporting what we do with donations, sponsorships or grants.

We believe that you can judge a community on the way the community’s most vulnerable are treated. One key charitable cause of ours is providing education programmes for our city’s most disadvantaged young people. Another is how we advocate on the behalf of others who are unable to advocate for themselves.

The Kind Foundation will live and die by our core values. We live them, we breathe them and we believe in them. If we don’t we will lose relevance, meaning, and effectiveness as an organisation. They mean different things to different people, but at their heart they ring true for all cultures and backgrounds – if we treat others how we would like to be treated, we will have a greater world.

Come on in, get involved, make a difference. Everyone is welcome.

We believe that the purpose of The Kind Foundation – investing in the next generation – is about what we do now so as to build social capital for the future.  We intentionally earn revenues from some of our programmes and services, and we re-invest those earnings into breaking down barriers to participation and meeting community needs.  See more about this in Strategic Intent Statement.

Employment Opportunities

Work or volunteer with us

Being such a diverse organisation, we often have vacancies available across a wide range of skill-based roles.  These range from hospitality to teaching and instructing, primarily paid roles, but we also have plenty of opportunities for volunteering too.

Our History

In October 2023, the YMCA Christchurch rebranded to The Kind Foundation.
Although we are no longer part of YMCA New Zealand and the Y Movement, we are very proud of our history here in Christchurch. Take a look at how our organisation has grown and developed since the 1800s.
