The 4C Centre is an innovation hub for young people in Christchurch. Our fundamental purpose is to support young people’s opportunities to use technology to build on the 4C key competencies – Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking and Curiosity.
Aimed at 15-25 year olds, the 4C has something for everyone, with physical and digital tools for all forms of creation.
Democratise access to technology
Enable young people aged 15-25 to have access to high-tech equipment and software without the need for money or enrolment in a particular course or institution – thereby breaking down inequities between different socio-economic groups.
Be youth-driven
Young people who are members will drive the evolution of the space, the technology and the way in which the space is governed/managed. There will be a high-trust model of membership where young people can access the space at any hours, do not need to have ‘adult’ or ‘institutional’ supervision and who have an active voice in decisions which affect them and the 4C Centre.
Be project-based
The purpose of the 4C Centre is ultimately about learning and creating pathways for members to employment or self-employment. Therefore the space is used for projects that utilise the space and the technologies in the space.
Be industry-activated and championed
The vision is that industry will offer projects or challenges or problems to the Centre that members can have a go at resolving. This will gain for them industry credibility and ultimately could lead to an income stream to support the Centre’s operational costs.
Membership is free after purchasing an access card for $20.
This gives members access to the Centre 24/7, 365 days of the year, from the day they join until their 26th birthday.
Members are vetted before membership is granted to ensure the 4C Centre is physically and emotionally safe for all. There is a process whereby members can raise concerns or make complaints if they feel unsafe or observe unsafe behaviour.
The 4C Centre has something for everyone, with physical and digital tools for all forms of creation. Our resources are available for you to bring your ideas to life.
Use our 3D printers, laser cutter and CNC machines to prototype and manufacture. Computers are available for you to sharpen your design skills.
Want to create media? Use our recording set up video, music, podcasting or streaming. Access to electronic resources will help you develop your coding skills or circuit building.
