WHY OUR CAMPS

Our staff know how to provide effective programming for schools, and we have two residential outdoor camps that offer different focuses depending on your school’s requirements.

At Wainui Park the programmes are based on adventure activities outdoor education, and our two programme packages are available to choose from depending on your school’s budget and teacher involvement. We can tailor these packages around a theme, like team building, leadership or adventure.

Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre focuses on environmental education, exploring the vastly different ecosystems in this unique alpine environment. Through engaging programming, we aim for students to actively want to engage with the world around them, and we can adapt programmes to incorporate your curriculum and intended learning outcomes.

Our Wainui Park programme packages are structured to ensure your school can best meet it’s learning outcomes, in the most time effective way.

Below you will see details for our Huia and Moa programme packages, which are based on a three day camp. We can adjust both of these programmes to suit the needs of your school by adding extra days. Make sure you complete the Enquiry Form to get more information about how the best camp can be tailored for your school.

MOA PROGRAMME

from $100 per person for a 3 day camp (does not include accommodation or catering)

For those looking for a camp fully facilitated by our instructors, try the Moa package which is jam packed with adventure! Arrive, get settled into the accommodation, have lunch and be welcomed in by your own dedicated staffer. Before starting your activities, there will be time set aside for the instructor to meet their group, get to know one another and set up the week with a group contract.

HUIA PROGRAMME

from $70 per person for a 3 day camp (does not include accommodation or catering)

This is our classic 3 day package which is a mix of self-led and instructor-led time slots. Arrive, get settled into the accommodation, have lunch and be welcomed in by your own dedicated staffer. Before starting any of the instructor-led activities, there will be time set aside for the instructor to meet their group, get to know one another and set up the week with a group contract.

ACTIVITIES AT WAINUI PARK

We offer a wide range of advanced, technical, non-technical and evening activities, as well as a range of activities for those wanting a little more challenge and adventure.

Instructor led – 3 hour duration

: This is perfect for groups who want to build up trust, co-operation, responsibility and communication. It is also great for individual goal setting, confidence and self-awareness.

: Adventure capital! We are going on, around, in and under the coastline with its rocks, seaweed, bird life, sea life, and constantly changing sea.

: Our sessions are run on flat ocean water, giving you the opportunity to see the amazing Akaroa Harbour from another perspective.

: It’s all in the name! Campers can choose from 0m to as high as 17.5m! The rest of the group help pull to the chosen height so you can see the amazing view over the bay to Akaroa.

Instructor led – 1.5 hour duration

: Great introduction to the correct, basic techniques in order to promote success as well as bring out each other’s competitive side.

: Low ropes is a series of activities and challenges that require co-operation, communication, trust, planning and being a reliable team member.

: Work as a team and staying dry is the goal! This involves strategic thinking, decision making and communication but above all, team work.

: We have quite a ride beginning at the top end of our small valley and speeding down past the trees. Instructors will incorporate fun challenges along the way.

: Learn the basics of sea safety and get a taste of the underwater world which will give confidence and interest in returning to it. (1.5 hour slot if self-drive to the site and back).

: The flying kiwi is a high ropes experience where the team works together to hoist the “Kiwi” in the air.

Self led OR Instructor led – 1.5 hour duration

: This activity is designed to provide high levels of success, teamwork and enjoyment using simple map reading skills.

: Plan and prepare a search team, collect clues and learn to track a person in the wilderness. Build and test your own rescue stretcher.

: Build your own survival shelter out of natural resources.

: While learning to use walkie-talkie radios the participants explore the camp and play games.

: This is a series of games and challenges for the team, emphasising cooperation, communication, trust and planning.

Whole camp activities

: A series of challenges given to the group emphasising co-operation, communication, trust and planning.

: This is a large group game emphasising co-operation, communication, trust and planning.

: From Tikao Bay to the Wainui Park, this tramp is a perfect entry level tramp with a good mix of hard work and rewarding views.

: A short drive from camp out to The Heads to a wee spot called Scenery Nook where the magic speaks for itself. This is full day tramp.

: Singing, socialising, skits and stories around a campfire is a time honoured and much loved tradition at camp.

Our programmes at Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre provide experiential learning through engaging, effective and enjoyable outdoor activities.

Our goal is to make learning an interactive and immersive experience that will stay with your students for years to come. We can adapt programmes to incorporate your curriculum or look at linking the learning gained here on camp with initiatives in your area.

ACTIVITIES AT ARTHUR’S PASS

All of our activities can be catered to suit your group’s needs and required learning outcomes. The APOEC manager will help to design your programme based around your school curriculum and intended learning outcomes.

Below are some of the activities that APOEC can run as part of our programme. The variety of activities allows for teacher’s preference, weather conditions, time of year, groups size, group age and group goals. Rain or snow does not usually keep us inside. However, if weather conditions are sufficiently nasty to keep us indoors, APOEC has indoor activity options available as well.

: These games can be designed to focus on leadership, team work, trust and communication

: A blindfold sensory trail activity where participants have to find their way through a rope maze leading through the bush

: Plan and prepare a search team, collect clues and learn to track a person in the wilderness. Build and test your own rescue stretcher.

: Begin with a theory session, then put those map reading skills into practice outside, adapted for differing skill levels.

: Build your own survival shelter out of natural resources.

: Learn to use a walkie-talkie and the phonetic alphabet before putting this into practice around the village.

: Get creative using natural materials to create a sculpture with personal meaning.

: Based on team work and navigation skills, race around the village to collect the 15 markers.

: Use the clues to find the kiwi or whio whilst learning about their predators and food habits.

: The walks range in length from 30 minutes to 8 hours duration.

: Learn about fire triangles, safety and structures, then build a fire to cook morning or afternoon tea on.

: Give your students an opportunity to take some time out to reflect on their journey with a beautiful backdrop.

: Learn how to work as a team to cross a river safely, by looking at the river dynamics and assessing a safe crossing site.

: Camp out locally or as a small expedition combined with hiking. Learn the basics including how to prepare, what to pack and how to cook outdoors.
