When Sarita’s daughter began attending Pūmanawa one day each week, the team took a patient and supportive approach.

Learning That Gets Children Moving
Pūmanawa Bishopdale also offers something families will not find as an independently bookable preschool activity: Elevate Minis, our unique movement programme exclusively for children enrolled at the centre.
Elevate Minis is included in regular fees and brings gymnastics, physical education, yoga and music and movement sessions into children’s early learning experience. By making movement a regular part of centre life, children have opportunities to climb, balance, jump, stretch, listen, experiment and build confidence in what their bodies can do.
The sessions are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, supporting physical development while encouraging children to participate, try new things and have fun with their friends.
Being connected with the Bishopdale Recreation Centre gives our children the opportunity to enjoy activities in the gym environment. For parent Bradi , this is one of the centre’s special features.

Elevate Minis is not a separate class or optional add-on. It is part of the richer early learning experience available to Pūmanawa children, at no extra cost to families.
Growing Confidence Through Play and Movement
Movement supports much more than physical development. As children navigate equipment, follow instructions, take turns and explore new activities, they are also building confidence, coordination, communication and social skills.
Some children may eagerly jump into a new activity. Others may prefer to watch before joining in. Both approaches are welcomed. Our teachers create a supportive environment where children can participate at their own pace and experience a sense of achievement.
These opportunities complement the wider play-based learning happening across the centre. Throughout the day, children can follow their interests, use their imagination, explore ideas and learn alongside others.

Bradi describes Pūmanawa as having the “best teachers, atmosphere and learning”, while Kirstyn says the trust her family has built with the teaching team has made their experience particularly meaningful.

For some families, the relationship with Pūmanawa continues even after a child has moved on to school. Kirstyn says her five-year-old still enjoys returning at drop-off and pick-up with a younger sibling, a lovely reflection of the sense of belonging built during her time at the centre.
