Schools travelled from throughout the South Island to test their skills on the Adventure Centre’s walls, but as anyone who has attended this event knows, the competition is about much more than reaching the top. It is about young people challenging themselves, supporting one another and discovering what they can achieve when they give something a go.
As home to the largest rope climbing wall in the South Island, the Adventure Centre has proudly hosted this competition for many years. Over that time, it has become a much-anticipated event, bringing together young climbers with a wide range of backgrounds, abilities and experience.
Throughout the two days, the walls were filled with memorable moments. Climbers worked their way through challenging routes, teammates cheered from below and students shared encouragement across school rivalries. There was plenty of friendly competition, but the strongest impression was one of positivity, connection and young people genuinely wanting one another to do well.
That atmosphere was reflected in the feedback shared throughout the competition. Xander summed up what the event means for many of the students: “It’s a great opportunity to get out of the classroom, climb with friends and enjoy some friendly competition.”
For returning climbers, the event has become a tradition to look forward to. “Thanks for putting on the event again,” said Tim. “I’ve been coming for years and it’s always a great time.”
Parents also appreciated seeing so many students enjoying the experience together. “Thank you for putting on this event. It’s great to see so many young people in one place having such a great time,” one parent shared.
These comments were echoed by many others who approached the Adventure Centre team during the competition to thank them for creating such a welcoming, positive and well-run event.

While the competition crowned its champions, every student who clipped in, took on a challenge and supported their fellow climbers contributed to the success of the event.
Climbing’s profile has grown considerably since the sport appeared on the Olympic stage, introducing a new generation to its unique combination of physical skill, problem-solving and perseverance. At the Adventure Centre, we have seen that interest continue to build as more young people discover what climbing has to offer.
The competition is not the only opportunity for secondary school students to get involved. Our Wednesday afternoon High School Climbing sessions run throughout the school term, giving young people a regular space to climb, build their skills and spend time with others who enjoy the sport.
For some students, these sessions are the beginning of a new recreational interest. For others, they can be a pathway towards taking part in events such as the South Island Secondary Schools Climbing Competition.
As the final climbs were completed and competitors prepared for the journey home, there was a real sense that the event had once again delivered something special. Not just a competition, but a celebration of skill, community and the joy of reaching new heights.
