The Challenge
This year’s theme was inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our successful applicants were flown to Christchurch and hosted at the beautiful Hotel Give with all meals provided—a fully immersive experience.
Three teams were formed from the 14 participants, and were given just seven intense days to devise a feasible solution to a single, critical challenge: Preserve Life Below Water.
To bring their ideas to life, our Grapplers had full, unrestricted access to the 4C Centre technology makerspace, including:
•	Manufacturing: 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines
•	Coding & Robotics: Full robotic equipment and coding stations.
•	Future Tech: AR / VR labs and a range of other creative spaces.
At the end of the week, the teams presented their physical, working prototypes to a distinguished judging panel of industry experts, including Rachel Cummins (Climate Action Campus), Elaine Moriarty (Environment Canterbury), Julian Ramsay (Ruamoko Solutions), Paddy Pawson (SCOPE) and Jake Dalton (4C Technical Mentor). Projects were judged on creativity, CAD, coding, electronics, and the application of the solution to the core theme.
Congratulations to our 2025 Winning Grapplers: Team Hydro Scout (Alodia, Parth, Ella, Arihant and Tony)! Their incredible boat prototype clearly demonstrated the strategic thinking and technical skills required for a truly feasible, world-changing solution.
Grapple is not just a tech competition; it’s a chance to grow in ways that go beyond the limits of the technical field.
